All water drawn for the system enters the Dalecarlia Reservoir. While the water moves slowly through Dalecarlia Reservoir, much of the sand and silt settles to the bottom. This is called pre-sedimentation. After screening, the addition of the algaecides and pre-sedimentation the water is either pumped to the Dalecarlia or McMillan treatment plants.

Approximately 51% of the untreated sediments, which are naturally occurring solids in the raw water taken from the Potomac River, are separated from the aqueous portion of the untreated water in the Dalecarlia This new residuals processing facility collects and dewaters solids generated by the existing Dalecarlia Water Treatment Plant in preparation for offsite disposal. Serviced by new underground piping, the facility is fed by three new pump stations constructed at the Georgetown Reservoirs, the Dalecarlia Forebay Reservoir and the existing Dalecarlia WTP. Dalecarlia existed as a reservoir beginning in the mid 1850s, which received water from the Washington Aqueduct. The water treatment plant was built ca 1922 to help meet the growing population. DC began adding chlorine to its drinking water in 1923 and the Dalecarlia rapid sand filter came online around 1927 and used sand and aluminum sulfate to clarify the water. Touching the southern bank of the Potomac River at Great Falls, Virginia, and extending primarily through Maryland and the District of Columbia, the aqueduct system is 60 feet in width throughout most of its length but widens at three locations: Great Falls, Dalecarlia Reservoir, and the Georgetown Reservoir. Dalecarlia Reservoir is the primary storage basin for drinking water in Washington, D.C., fed by an underground aqueduct in turn fed by low dams which divert portions of the Potomac River near Great Falls and Little Falls. Dalecarlia Reservoir is situated 4000 feet southwest of Westmoreland Circle.

Serviced by new underground piping, the facility is fed by three new pump stations constructed at the Georgetown Reservoirs, the Dalecarlia Forebay Reservoir

When the aqueduct was originally built, no water filtration was planned. In the early years of operation the water was routed through the system's two earlier-built reservoirs, Dalecarlia and Georgetown, which were designed to settle sediment out of the water. In 1873 the Army began construction of a new water supply tunnel, led by Garrett Lydecker, a major in the Army Corps of Engineers. [3]

2014-02-12 · The article first describes the Dalecarlia area but then goes on to outline the agreement between the US and the B&O as they laid their line through the reservoir. Most of it seems occupied with the concern that the US had to keep the water in the reservoir clean and separate from the intrusion of the rail line. Interesting stuff!
