"The element appears not to have a stable form and probably does not exist in nature" [Flood, "Origin of Chemical Names"]. Astatine-211, a heavier congener of iodine that emits α particles at energies lethal to cells, has attracted interest in recent years as a therapeutic tool, but has the drawback that direct labeling of proteins with this element forms weak At C bonds that are subject to cleavage under clinical conditions. A team of researchers using the ISOLDE nuclear-physics facility at CERN has measured for the first time the so-called electron affinity of the chemical element astatine, the rarest naturally occurring element on Earth. The result, described in a paper just published in Nature Communications, is important for both fundamental and applied research. As well as giving access to hitherto unknown a chemical element that is radioactive and is the rarest natural element on the Earth's surface: The properties of astatine remain a mystery.

The chemical symbol for Astatine is At. Astatine is the rarest naturally occurring element on the Earth’s crust. It occurs on Earth as the decay product of various heavier elements. Astatine was the second synthetic element to be conclusively identified just three years after technetium, was isolated by Carlo Perrier and Emilio Segre of the University of Palermo. The element had actually been created in a cyclotron particle accelerator at the University of California in Berkeley where Segre spent the following summer continuing his research.
It was made by Dale Coson, Kenneth Ross Mackenzie and Emilio Segrè by bombarding bismuth with alpha particles. It is very unstable and breaks down Periodic Table of Elements Element Astatine - At. Comprehensive data on the chemical element Astatine is provided on this page; including scores of properties, element names in many languages, most known nuclides of Astatine. Common chemical compounds are also provided for many elements.
Astatine is a chemical element discovered closer to the middle of the last century by a group of Californian scientists. It is a very unstable and dangerous radioactive element which has got its name after the Greek word meaning unstable. Astatine, with an estimated total mass of 25 grams on Earth, is the rarest natural element here. It is produced in some decay chains, its most stable isotope has a half-life of only a little above eight hours. Chemically, astatine is similar to iodine, but more metallic and inert than this. Despite its rarity and short life, it has an application. Astatine is the last of the known halogens and was synthesized in 1940 by Corson and others at the University of California.

astatine (n.) radioactive element, named 1947, from Greek astatos "unstable" (see astatic) + chemical suffix -ine (2). So called for its short half-life and lack of stable isotopes. "The element appears not to have a stable form and probably does not exist in nature" [Flood, "Origin of Chemical Names"].

Astatine (At) may be the rarest naturally occurring element in the Earth’s crust, but it is a member of the halogen family [fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), and astatine (At)] and is presumed to have characteristics similar to other Group 17 elements.
